Include/Soar

The final piece, the trimmings and scraps accumulated over time from the previous works were blended to create a chunky gray.  Clean paper was added incrementally creating a gradient as the fractal grows.

A spiral is the boundary and the source.  The shape meets the edge of frame, which is enveloped as growth continues past the old window.

The past work is a foundation, which the future work uses.

Restore

Using paper to create relief, elevation shows materiality.  Pulverized beans, tannic dyes, wood pulp, and paynes gray create texture and tone.

A portion of the grid is framed, the grid is pushed and pulled.  Rasterized oscillations, highly pixelated and patinated.

Gather

Paper making continues, printmaking begins.  Acrylic engraving used to press un-pressed paper, allows for creation of form with texture, placed within a surrounding texture.  This was a happy discovery of a technique that seems to have many things to offer.

The last one to the gathering.  Now we may begin.

Cherish

The past journey led to a new discovery, the path through texture has led to paper, the mixing and pouring of which provides many avenues of exploration.  An interesting stop, this has given the opportunity for study and experimentation.  Many things to try.

The road trip came.  It was south to new places, and many fond memories.  As a passenger, the windows of a car become portholes to the passing world.

Journey

Deep into the path of searching for texture.

Journey brings to mind so many road trips, through this country and others.  A favorite past time of reflection and new perspectives, always welcome and enjoyed.

Lift

Exploration continues, of texture and shading.

Thoughts are of peeling layers, of grunge and wear, the palimpsest reversed.

Begin

An interest was piqued to explore textures in new ways.  Utilizing objects in my immediate surroundings, including that of paper itself, I discovered interesting ways to manipulate and layer.

Inspiration came from the digital landscape.  Eerily glowing skewed horizons of vectrified places and things.  The trivium expands, and extends.

Offer

I began this drawing with the simple intent to have an image that lifts off of the paper.  I had mental images of vacuoles within the intracellular matrix, providing as they do.

I decided to begin by sketching out ideas, and resulted in a few types of form that I would then create.  Using separate sheets of paper, I began building texture with water color, and simultaneously creating shapes to be stacked.

Behold

The natural world holds uncounted secrets and surprises.  Often they find us at our least expectant, displaying beauty, wonderment, awe, or terror.

Beginning as a playful study in contrast and pattern, I began sketching and found myself drawn towards certain biological textures.  Hard, defined edges creating shape, and other soft transitions which only suggest, inspired me.   Subtle changes in tone, to show perspective and form, became quite entertaining.

Trust

I find the trust we, as a society, put into the built objects around us an interesting thing.  These infrastructural pieces of our lives, which have so much utility, could let us down at any moment.  We forget, ignore, and trust.  It will be ok.

In order to create a dreamy feeling, and find textures within the puddles created when adding additional water to washes, I worked mostly with wet-on-wet water color for most of this painting.  The scene I recreated from bits of memory.  As it developed on paper, I added additional pieces of feeling related to certain places I tend to find myself.

Range

A slight feeling of lonesomeness lingers in me as I stare out of an airplane window.  I see the patterns that are woven together by nature and by man.  The extended range of view from this vantage point gives life an interesting perspective.  It is a lens that illuminates processes, forms, and patterns in their true scale.

Inspired by these illuminations, I decided to respond to some of the observed textures and patterns of the landscape as seen from 30,000 ft.  I used found wood milling scraps, with their natural pattern and tone along with added dye, to paint an image of these things.

Hope Springs Eternal

The rippling form the falling leaf creates combines with the molten flow of the upwelling.
Focus shifts now from the depths to the surface as consciousness realizes place.
Following the gentle flow, the leaf moves now through the densely canopied forest.
Spiraling slowly with an oscillating list, a leaf begins a new trajectory.
Ever more entertaining than a stable position on the forest floor, this small voyage provides.
The space underneath shifts with the space above, and animals and plants accompany both.
Their home above or below, as the small leafy vessel glides on the interstitial.

The daydream is broken and I return to the present.  I step into the canoe and begin.

Fleeting Touch

A warm rush sends hair on end and at attention.  The warming rush extends into the spine, bounces off of the interior and returns outward, emanating throughout as an expanding energy.  Slightly short of breath, inhaling with a hint of nervousness.

The moment passes, leaving behind a slow dissolving wake.  An idea lingers, as does a faint dream upon wakening.

Nudge, Nudge...

Three nudges.

A thoughtless nudge as the two pass.
One turns, and wonders.

The flow decreases as they grow nearer.
Gently now, as they converge.

In the blurry night things seems farther.
All at once they not.
